“Red” Paired Wtih Bear Republic Brewing’s Racer 5 IPA.

“Red” is a 2010 action film directed by Robert Schwentke, with script by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber.  It is loosely based by the DC Comics book series of the same name by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer.  It stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker, Brian Cox, Julian McMahon, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgine, Rebecca Pidgeon, and James Remar.  The movie follows CIA “Retired, Extremely Dangerous” agent Frank Moses (Willis) in an adventure with other retired CIA agents who are being eliminated by someone unknown to them.  This film features a cast that is beloved but isn’t really given enough to do to make you care about their characters.  It does have some fun action, odd ball humor, enough romance to not be just another film based on a comic.  It is an okay movie, but not great and not horrid.   It spawned a sequel and won best Musical or Comedy at the 2011 Golden Globes.

The Beer Lover’s Guide To The Movies pairs this film with Bear Republic Brewing’s Racer 5 IPA.  This India Pale Ale has an ABV of 7.5%.  It pours a clear amber and sports a creamy lasting head.  It smells of bready sweet malts, earth, grass, along with strong notes of honey and flowers.  It tastes of fruits, most notable grapefruit, lemon, mangos, and pineapple, along with bread, flowers, and caramel.  It has wonderful bitter finish to it.  This is an old-school IPA, much like the actors in the film.  But this beer will stand above the “just okay-ness” of the film and give you an enjoyable evening.
