“The Old Guard” is an action film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, with script by Greg Rucka, based on his comic book series. It starts Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film follows a Black Ops team of immortal mercenaries whose secret is discovered by a former CIA operative who sells them out for what he thinks is the greater good. This is a fun little action film, with well executed fight scenes. It features heady dialogue about the pitfalls of immortality beyond that of “you outlive everyone you have ever loved”. The film locks itself into a tone and pacing outside of the action that is melancholy and a bit too slow.
The Beer Lover’s Guide To The Movies pairs this film with Brooklyn Brewery’s Black OPS. This barrel-aged, which is aged in Four Rose Bourbon barrels for four months, Russian Imperial Stout has an ABV of 12.4%. It pours black with a tan head that lingers. It smells of bourbon, dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, licorice, and vanilla. It tastes of cherries, and chocolate with an earthiness to it. It is well balanced with a bitter and bourbon finish. It is low on carbonation. I picked this beer because it is a great aged beer. When I watch a movie about undying warriors, I find myself pondering things that are older and classic. This limited edition beer is a classic and worth drinking along with the movie, as you consider the ups and downs of immortality.
