“The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” is a 2004 comedy directed by Wes Anderson, with script by Anderson and Noah Baumbach. It stars Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Seu Jorge, and Bud Cort. It follows Steve Zissou (Murray) as an oceanographer who makes films about his work to fund his research. His partner is killed by the exceedingly rare “jaguar shark” and Zissou sets out to destroy it. The film pokes fun at the real life of famed eco-hero Jacques Cousteau and embraces his memory with love. Zissou’s crew has been on many adventures together and feel the loss of a beloved team member. The film is about legacy and how one finds it. The film’s soundtrack features Seu Jorge covering David Bowie songs in Portuguese with an acoustic guitar, which is a refreshing choice. The film was a box office flop and panned by the critics of the time. Since it was released it has gained a cult following and is now viewed a more positive light by the critics. I find this film amusing for it whimsical tone.
The Beer Lover’s Guide To The Movies pairs this film with Peroni Nastro Azzurro European Pale Lager. This beer has an ABV of 5.1%. It is a clear straw color. It gives off a skunky smell along with yeasty bread and lemon. You get citrus, corn, grainy malts, as well as floral and grassy hops to balance out the sweetness. Peroni is Italy’s number one beer. I picked this beer because the film has a very Mediterranean feel to it. This beer speaks to me of the Mediterranean Sea, of voyages of adventure, and the feeling of belonging that Zissou’s crew has with each other.
