“The Way, Way Back” is a 2013 coming-of-age film written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash in their directorial debuts. The film stars, Liam James, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, and features Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Faxon, Rash, Rob Corddry, and Amanda Peet. The movie follows a 14-year-old who goes on summer vacation in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with his mom, and her abusive boyfriend, and his daughter. The boy finds escape at the local water park. It becomes a safe space away from his family and he finds acceptance with the people who work there. This is B-Movie. This work is not making some profound statement that will change how people think. This film, however, is very funny, sweet, heartwarming, and relatable largely due to the supporting cast. The directors got great performances out of the supporting group of actors, Rockwell, Collette, Janney, and Rudolph. The reviews were mostly favorable.
The Beer Lover’s Guide To The Movies pairs this film with Fremont Brewing Company’s Summer Ale. This American Pale Ale has an ABV of 5.2%. The beer is a pale amber-ish gold with a lingering white head to it. This has a citrus aroma with floral, herbal, and grassy notes to it. It has a light orange flavor with herbal tea and strong malt touches that adds structure to it. It has a wonderful hop bitterness to it and finishes clean, crisp, and dry. The beer is matched to this film because of the summer feel it has to it. It is not the cheap mass-produced beer that lots of us drank while coming-of-age. This is a beer you drink while reflecting on those days from your perch of experience.
