“Drive” is a 2011 action film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn with the script by Hossein Amini and based on Jame Sallis’ 2005 novel of the same name. It stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, and Albert Brooks. Gosling plays a ‘man without a name’ that is a mechanic, stunt driver, and sometimes getaway driver. This man falls for his neighbor and agrees to help her husband with a heist that goes wrong. The film deals with the “man without a name” avoiding the mob that wants to clean the mess of the heist up and seeking out his revenge. This movie is a cousin of the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western where he played a “man without a name” seeking his revenge. This cost $15 million to make and did $81.4 million at the box office. The critics thought well of it for its art house violence, music, and striking imagery.
The Beer Lover’s Guide to the Movies pairs with this film with Red Hook Brewery’s Atomic Robot IPA. This Indian Pale Ale has an ABV of 4.2%. It has a light body with the aroma of Lemon, Mangos and Apricots. It tastes of lemon, mango, grapefruit, light malt, and a crisp acidic bite. The beer is an art house beer. It is a twist on a classic¸ much like “Drive” is a twist on any of the films in the “Dollars” trilogy.
