“The Half of It” is a 2020 coming of age film that was written and directed by Alice Wu. It stars Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer, and Alexxis Lemire. The film is a twist on Cyrano de Bergenac. It is set in a small town where a local football player, Paul (Diemer), asks a closeted lesbian immigrant, Ellie (Lewis), to help woo the deacon’s daughter Aster (Lemire) as they finish high school in a small town, possibly set in a Washington State. Both Paul and Ellie are in love with Aster. The pacing of the film is slower than most modern films but pays off as it allows the characters to reflect on choices. The movie is less about Cyrano de Bergenac getting the hand of one he loves and more about Ellie learning self-acceptance. The film ends on an extremely cute note but one that leaves it open to the viewer to imagine the possibilities. The film was to be released in the theaters but because of Covid debuted on Netflix.
The Beer Lover’s Guide to the Movies teams this film up with Rainier Beer brewed by the Pabst Brewing Company. This beer as an ABV of 4.6%. The beer pours clear pale gold and smells of sweet grain and paper. It tastes of hops and bread. I chose this beer because it reminds me of the cheap mass-produced beer I drank in my younger days and you find today in every grocery store. This beer is a first beer for many, and pairs well with the film as the leads all explore their first times.
