“If Beale Street Could Talk” paired with Fremont Brewing’s Sky Kraken Hazy Pale Ale

“If Beale Street Could Talk” is a 2018 drama that is based on the James Baldwin novel of the same name and directed as well as written by Barry Jenkins.  It has an ensemble cast that includes Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Colman Domingo, Teyonah Parris, Michael Beach, Dave Franco, Diego Luna, Pedro Pascal, Ed Skrein, Brian Tyree Henry, and Regina King.  The film follows a young woman, with the support of her family, who seeks to clear the name of her boyfriend who was wrongly arrested in New York in the 1970s, before the birth of their child.  Kiki Layne and Stephan James have the most amazing chemistry on screen, and you can feel the love their characters have for each other.  I wish the story were less tragic, but it a story that is the reality of many black men in the 70s and even today.  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated this film for four Oscars including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Supporting Actress which Regina King won.

The Beer Lover’s Guide to the Movies pairs this beer with Fremont Brewing’s Sky Kraken Hazy Pale Ale.  This beer as an APV of 5.5%.  It is unfiltered and because of that has a hazy pale-straw color.  On the nose you will get notes of lemon and pineapple.  You will pick out melon, pepper, and a lot of citrus with not being too bitter and leaves you with a hoppy finish.  This beer is meant to be paired with food.  Much like Layne and James’ character in the film needing each other so much, this beer needs food – Ahi jumps to the front of the line for me, or maybe an Oatmeal Cookie.  You will love how this beer fits with my food suggestions and this film.
