The Big Sick is a 2017 comedy directed by Michael Showalter and written by Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani. It stars Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazen, Holly Hunter, and Ray Romano. It is about an interethnic / interfaith couple that are dealing with their cultural differences when one of them gets extremely ill, while dealing with their parents, and trying to make a living at something they love. This film is loosely based on Nanjiani and his wife’s real courtship. I found this film funny and heartbreaking. The movie was nominated for Best Original Screenplay by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The film was loved by the critics and was successful at the box office.
The Beer Lover’s Guide To The Movies pairs this film with No-Li Brewhouse’s Born Ready Citrus India Pale Ale. This beer has a ABV of 7.5%. You will find the aromas of malted barley, oranges, and pine needles inviting you to this straw-colored beer. It has a light mouthfeel and it is not as bitter as most IPAs. It has wonderful citrus notes on the tongue and is a well-balanced beer. I chose this beer because it will keep making you feel good, even when one of the character’s is sick. It will keep you going during the emotionally hard parts of the film.
