Uncut Gems is a drama directed by brothers Josh and Benny Safdie, who co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein. It stars Adam Sandler, Kevin Garnett, Idina Menzel, Lakeith Standfield, Julia Fox and Eric Bogosian. This movie follows Howard Ratner, Sandler’s character, who has a gambling addiction, owes a ton of money to a few different people, and happens to be a jeweler in New York’s Diamond District. To pay his debts, he receives a big uncut gem, which he tries desperately to hold on to and sell. Sandler gets praise for not playing the same “Adam Sandler” character we are familiar with. Kevin Garnett gets praise for being a sports figure that can actually act. The story is not for everyone. There is no story arc for Sandler’s character and the ending of the film is the character’s behavior played out. The movie seems like lots of people yelling at each other for two and a half hours. Critics seem to love the film; I think mostly for Sandler not playing Sandler.
The Beer Lover’s Guide To The Movies pairs this film with Fremont Brewing’s Dark Star Beer. It is an Oatmeal Stout with an ABV of 8.0%. You get aromas of coffee, toast, chocolate, and spices from this beer. It tastes like a good combination of sweet and bitterness with a touch of acidity and has a savory finish. I chose this beer to balance out the movie. The movie is not a lift you up sort of thing, so I chose this beer to bring me up. This beer makes me happy, while the movie – well – not so much.
